Michaela Eichwald (b.1967 GE) is known for her abstract, materially dense paintings and mixed-media works, often combining acrylic, oil, spray paint, lacquer, wax, and unconventional supports like synthetic fabrics, faux leather, and other non-traditional surfaces. Eichwald treats painting as something unstable, her works often looking rough, layered, intentionally contradictory by mixing humor, discomfort, and abstraction.
habitat extends an invitation to Eichwald because of the friction held hostage by the brush strokes of her paintings.
Eichwald’s work has been shown in numerous solo exhibitions, recent include Kunsthalle Basel (Basel, 2021–2022); Walker Art Center (Minneapolis, 2020–2021); Lenbachhaus (Munich, 2020–2021); Palais de Tokyo (Paris, 2014); Kunstverein Aachen (Aachen, 2010s); Kunstverein Schwerin (Schwerin, 2010s); and Galerie Daniel Buchholz (Cologne, 1997, early career).
