Gert Verhoeven’s (b.1964) work addresses possible means of escape, both in art and in life. Verhoeven rejects choosing between yes and no; between possibilities and non-possibilities, as he wishes to keep all options open and so keeps his distance from categories/definitions laid down in art history.
habitat extends an invitation to Verhoeven to which he is welcome to respond ‘yo’ ‘nes,’ or not at all.
Verhoeven’s work has been shown in numerous solo exhibitions, recent include Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens (Deurle, 2003); Xavier Hufkens Gallery (Brussels, 1996, 2002, 2005); Christine Burgin (New York, 2000); Galleria Tucci Russo (Torino, 2003); De Garage / CC Strombeek (Mechelen/Brussels, 2011); Kiosk (Ghent, 2021); and Galerie Nelson-Freeman (Paris, 2004). His work has also been featured in group exhibitions at WIELS (Brussels, 2014); MARTa Herford (Herford, 2014); Witte de With (Rotterdam, 2013); SMAK (Ghent, 2011); Brussels Biennial (Brussels, 2008); and Kunsthalle Bern (Bern, 2005).
